“You always want to accelerate through any shot, but it’s especially true in bunkers.

“If I tell my students to get to a full finish, it ensures that they will accelerate through the ball. Thinking about getting to a full finish is just an easier swing thought than thinking about accelerating. If you get to a full finish, you have to accelerate the club. There is just no way around it. Everything else just happens.”

“I just don’t know how he can sit there and think his game is going to improve,” Couples said.

Maybe it’s just me, but what message does that send to Greensboro, the million-dollar FedEx Cup series title sponsors, the TV networks paying rights fees and golf in general – even if he does have custody of the kids?

Amazingly, the PGA Tour saw fit to pimp the EA Sports publicity stunts on its website Friday, even though Woods’ decision to skip Greensboro reads an awful lot like a tacit message that he doesn’t care about the FedEx Cup – or not enough to choose playing actual golf in lieu of satisfying one of his last remaining endorsement clients.

Custody of the kids or not, it smells all wrong and screams, “I am not there.”

As for Woods, all the public knows for sure is that he spent one day this week helping hawk a video game.

As for the kid from Indiana who won the right to play Woods on his video game? The PGA Tour story noted that the 19-year-old held a 10-shot lead over Woods at one point.

To Ban or Not To Ban Long Putter

After the US PGA, Keegan Bradley became the first player to win a major using a belly putter at the 93rd PGA Championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club last week. Will the long putter become hot?

The United States Golf Association and R&A - gatekeepers of how the grand old game is played - missed the boat when they had the chance to ban the use of belly putters and long putters years ago.

Unfortunately, now with the winners of two big tournaments over the last two weeks on the PGA Tour using them, any attempt to ban those putters from competition might be a case of trying to shut the barn door after the horses have bolted.

According to a recent article by Randy Phillips of the Postmedia News, these long putters are an "aberration" and should be removed from the game as soon as possible. For the record, I also have never heard of Randy Phillips.

The biggest issue that naysayers to the long putter have regarding their use is the anchoring technique that players will use while putting. In the case of a belly putter, a player can anchor the putt-end of the club into his stomach (hence the name, of course) and make a pendulum-like swing without the worry of a player breaking his wrists. For a longer putter, a player holds the club with a split-handed grip to create the same pendulum motion. In both examples, the player's wrists remain steady and a smooth putting stroke is the result.

This lack of "wrist breaking" seems to be the major issue that has everyone up in a tizzy. According to an interview for the Toronto Star, putting-guru Dave Pelz suggests that "the feel and the ability to determine the stroke needed to putt the ball the right distance are helped." Furthermore, Pelz argues that the longer putters prevent the player's forearms from rolling-over, thus eliminating the possibility that a putt can be pushed or pulled off-line during impact.

Should the USGA and R&A ban the use of longer putters during competition? Personally, I don't see the purpose of doing so. As far as what the aforementioned definitions suggest, a "stroke" is still being made on the golf ball. More importantly, a player still has to read the green, account for the surrounding elements such as wind and grass type, determine the appropriate speed of the putt, and make a confident stroke while in the midst of thousands of spectators at a professional tour event with millions of dollars on the line.

Those latter details, in my opinion, separate the professionals from the amateurs.

"So many things are going to change for me now."

Eight months from now, the next major golf championship will take place — in the springtime at Augusta, which means we have a long winter to debate the health of the PGA Tour and the future of the game as it relates to the status of Tiger Woods.

What would Jack Nicklaus have accomplished if he had not had to compete against Tom Watson, who won eight majors and Lee Trevino, who won six? And what would Jack have won playing with Tiger’s equipment — which prompts a third: What would Tiger have won using Jack’s equipment?

The debates will go on, but in the meantime, let’s enjoy the opportunity to learn more about the many fine young players on the tour.

There is an exception to prove the rule about the four major championship winners this season. And, yes, the exception is Darren Clarke, the 42-year-old Ulsterman who won the British Open last month. Championship.

The story at the British Open was different. In the 22 major championships contested before his Open victory, Clarke had reached the weekend just six times. Winning was a triumph of perseverance, grit and the good fortune of having ideal Northern Ireland weather on the southeast coast of England for a week at Royal St. George’s. To predict a second major for the contented, sated Clarke requires quite a leap of faith.

Not so for 2011’s other three major winners. Bradley’s back-to-back birdies on the hardest stretch of holes at the P.G.A. Championship on Sunday at Atlanta Athletic Club was only the most recent example of the sort of mental resilience his generation of players has in abundance.

At the United States Open, mere months after crashing and burning on the back nine and shooting an 80 to lose the Masters, Rory McIlroy, 22, came back and set a scoring record of 16 under par to win by eight strokes at Congressional. And after the aplomb with which McIlroy dealt with the Augusta defeat, there were few who did not believe he would win. But so soon?

Why not? The other thing about young players today is their lack of fear. Even though 28-year-old Brendan Steele, who was tied for the 54-hole lead at the P.G.A. Championship, did not perform up to his capabilities Sunday, it had nothing to do with his lack of confidence — confidence born of the kind of extraordinary talent he needed to shoot a 66 in the third round.

After all that… et tu Stevie?

Oh, and what about Scott, who went unmentioned by Williams? Didn’t he have anything to do with the win? Wasn’t he the one who shot a final-round 65 to finish with a 17-under 263 and a comfortable four-shot margin over Rickie Fowler and Luke Donald?

Scott’s reaction to the ensuing media circus, however, only reaffirms what a strong pairing the player and caddy form. Laid back bordering on lackadaisical, Scott’s talent needs the type of over-the-top energy, unsurpassed expertise and unrivaled experience Williams brings to the bag. Scott doesn’t need his ego stroked by Williams — that’s a role better played by a bikini-clad Kate Hudson or Ana Ivanovic — and he doesn’t seem offended by the perceived err in caddy etiquette.

“I certainly don’t think that was his intention to steal my moment at all,” explained Scott. “We’ve had our chat about the whole thing, and he feels the way he feels. …

“He was really excited to win. Obviously he had not won for a little while, and for him, he’s really passionate about it and that’s what I see. And when you’re passionate and in that situation, I think it all got a little out of hand. But we’ll just go on from here.”

Scott’s eighth career PGA Tour victory was clearly his most impressive — and just as prestigious as his wins at the Players Championship in 2004 and Tour Championship in 2006. But did Williams have anything to do with the results, or was he just “carrying the bag,” as so many have suggested?

“Was he a help? Are you kidding?” scoffed Scott. “Nobody knows this place like Steve.”

Having caddied almost exclusively for major champions — Tiger (14), Raymond Floyd (4) and Greg Norman (2) have won a combined 20 majors — Williams knows what it takes to win; Scott knows that. And pretty soon, everyone else in golf will know that, too.
